Are recruits paid during training?
Deputy Sheriff-Recruits are paid during their training period at the Basic Academy.
Will I be assigned to Detention first?
Academy Graduates are assigned to the Detention Division or Patrol Division based on staffing needs at the time they graduate from the Police Academy. If assigned to Detention, there is no minimum time required to transfer to the Patrol Division.
Do I need to have higher education or law enforcement experience to apply?
The minimum education requirement to apply is a US high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or California high school proficiency certificate.
What if I went to school outside of the country?
Applicants can contact the GED office for more information on obtaining a complete evaluation of their foreign transcripts.
Do we offer relocation assistance?
We currently do not offer relocation assistance, but our recruiting unit can provide recruits with resources and housing recommendations.
Should I start doing lifetime fitness before the academy?
Recruits entering the academy should have a strong baseline of physical fitness. Do not wait until the start of the academy to start working out.
What If I am in the National Guard or a Reservist?
Deputy Sheriffs can serve as Reservist or National Guardsman and can be accommodated if placed on military orders.
